Dr. John S. Gaal Annual Merit Scholarship


The St. Louis Carpenters District Council, in collaboration with the St. Louis Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Program, will award an annual scholarship in the amount of $500 to an exemplary journeyman or apprentice carpenter who excels in the craft of carpentry and aspires to a greater level of education. This scholarship will be applied toward a construction-related degree for the cost of tuition, books, fees, and required educational supplies.
General Scholarship Criteria
Applicants for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:
a. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
b. Must be a legal resident of the state of Missouri or Illinois.
c. Must be a journeyman carpenter or an active indentured apprentice of fourth term or higher.
d. Must complete a minimum of three (3) credit hours for two consecutive semesters through a nationally recognized accredited college or university.
e. Must submit an essay of at least 500 words regarding the value of higher education.
Scholarship Guidelines
Scholarship recipient will:
a. Be eligible to receive only one Dr. John S. Gaal Merit Scholarship.
b. Receive the award after completion of the second consecutive semester course.
c. Maintain at least a 2.5 GPA at the academic level and an 85% GPA at the apprenticeship level.
Applicants may apply up to November 30th and the award will be made the second week of December.
